Your Guide to NDIS, NDIA and Avoca: Who Does What
If you’ve been looking into disability support in Australia, you have most likely come across the terms NDIS and NDIA.
And if you are confused… you are not alone.
We get a lot of messages from people asking how to apply for the NDIS, or looking for support through the scheme. And while we would love to help in that space, that is “not what we do.”
So we thought we would clear things up in a simple, “no-jargon” way.
First things first – what is the NDIS?
The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a government program that provides funding to people living with a permanent and significant disability.
In simple terms, it helps people access the support they need. That might include care, therapy, equipment or services that make everyday life easier and more independent.
So when people say “I am on the NDIS,” what they usually mean is that they have been approved for funding and can now choose providers to support them.
And what about the NDIA?
This is where it gets a little confusing.
The NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) is the organisation that actually runs the NDIS.
They are the ones behind the scenes making decisions. Things like who is eligible, how much funding someone receives, and how the scheme operates overall.
A simple way to think about it:
The NDIS is the program, and the NDIA is the team running it.
So where do we come in?
This is the most important part.
Avoca is not the NDIS.
We do not provide funding and we do not manage NDIS plans.
At Avoca, we help NDIS service providers protect themselves, their businesses, and their clients by providing tailored insurance solutions.”
Why is insurance important for NDIS providers?
If you are working under the NDIS as a support worker or provider, having the right insurance is not just a good idea, it is essential.
Things do not always go to plan. Accidents can happen. People can get injured. Situations can change quickly. Insurance is there to protect you when that happens.
- Protecting your business and livelihood: Working in disability support involves real responsibilities. Insurance helps protect you financially if something goes wrong.
- Meeting NDIS requirements and obligations: Many providers are required to have appropriate insurance in place to operate safely and meet compliance standards.
- Protecting your workers: If you employ staff, insurance such as workers compensation helps ensure they are covered if they are injured on the job.
- Building trust with participants: Participants and their families are more likely to choose providers who are properly insured and professional.
Who needs NDIS insurance?
You may need insurance if you are:
- A support worker
- A disability service provider
- A business delivering services under the NDIS
- Employing staff within the NDIS space
If this sounds like you, having the right cover is critical.
